    These are great knives. I've got a couple and really enjoy the overall blade shape, grind, and precise tip. I'd love to get the regular Outdoorsman, but, with these available, I'm not sure I want to add nearly a hundred bucks to the cost to get one. Do you have a link to that sheath?

    Getting one in as good quality as this for even $150 is incredibly hard. These days, the new ones are $225, but they're made in China and don't follow the old spec at all.

    The best army jacket (not only army) ever. Of course, military issue not commercial or some copy variant. I got 7 of these, made by Golden mfg, Cherokee, So-Sew and John Ownbey from 1970 - 1983 4 of them are OG and 3 in a M81 woodland pattern. Too much long lasting jackets just for one life .🤣🤣🤣

    If you would have asked me which of these two were the most expensive just based off looks, I would have said the condor, to me it just looks the part, I think it would feel way better in the hand and definitely like the blade profile much better! But that said you can’t go wrong if you have them both!😅

    The original design had a 6 inch blade for the first several years but, they kept getting broken so they shortened the blade to the more well known 5 inches. The saw back was designed so the pilot could cut through the new Jet Plane canopy if necessary - not the metal frame or skin. Initially released during the Korean War to the brand new Jet Pilots thus it's called the JPK or Jet Pilot Knife. Some had a light green colored paint daub on the hilt that glowed and some did not. The Glow In The Dark ones went to the Navy and others to other forces.

    Except Mountain Men, used an Axe or hatchet, and yes even a saw, to process wood. The Hudson Bay knife, is in its simplest form, a Butcher Knife. Used for breaking down game, then cutting the meat into portions. Yes, you can chop and split wood with it, until you ruin the edge.

    Is there a secondary bevel (even a very small one)? Bought a White River puuko and had to return because there was a secondary bevel even though they say it’s a “true” puuko. Takes some real skill to grind a blade of this nature properly.

    • @CommonCentsOutdoorsman
      @CommonCentsOutdoorsman 16 днів тому

      Tiny bevel. For me it would be easily removed but I prefer it. Word of caution though, Condor can have a way of blade edge inconsistency so who knows what you may get. If your not able to fix it you could probably return it. Good luck!

    Rough Ryders got me into slip joints. Case are too expensive to just buy a bunch and see if you like them, but rough Ryder are made well (there’s some lemons obviously), and I was impressed by what I’ve gotten. I’ve had to return a couple over the years, but they’re warrantied for life. I’ve got a lot of them, as I decided to collect them along with the vintage stuff, and rough Ryders are great users for sure. I recommend their carbon steel knives, they are made of T10 tool steel and from what I understand, it’s basically Chinese 1095. They have about 4 or 5 series with that steel and they’re great. Also, they make some VG-10 steel slip joints for the same low prices as their other stuff, and it’s the real deal, ppl tested the Rockwell on them to see. So yeah, if you’re against buying Chinese, I’ll never convince you but if you don’t mind, I def recommend them to ppl along with SAKs as first skip joint options. Cool vid man, I dig watching your stuff.

    it also holds a terrible edge😂 thats a good thing because it can hold “an edge” which is the important part. the next important part is finding a way to sharpen to a good edge, this steel is so strong my one and only 2 sided stone doesn’t do the trick😂

  • @michaelhernandez410

    My local Walmart had one non-serrated version left. I bought it. I wish Gerber would listen to their customers and make a plain edge available again. Why do they insist on jamming serrated edge knives down the throats of their customers? I, like most people, HATE SERRATIONS! I've taken more than one knife to a grinder to remove serrations. Fortunately, Gerber has competitors who offer plain edged knives. Since I have more than one pack, I have been forced to purchase a competitor's knife for my other packs. Why is Gerber so arrogant? I've worked for a couple of companies that 'knew better' than their customers. They're bankrupt, now. Gerber might want to take note- look at Budweiser and Disney.

    • @CommonCentsOutdoorsman
      @CommonCentsOutdoorsman 21 день тому

      I don't mind them on this one but it should be so easy to offer a plain edge. I've sharpened some so much they disappeared after a while.

    That's good Buckskin leather, same stuff Benchmade uses . Unfortunately, it's way too soft and needs to be wet formed or use some leather hardener. My Benchmade Bushcrafter sheath works great, but that leather sucks. If they made it with basic vegtan, that design would be excellent. That convex edge is pretty cool to see on such a low-cost blade. It would be easy to give it a full convex. I can not leave my edges alone, LOL . I've been gone too, brother , life stuff....also had to bery my dog . 15 year old pug , she did good, but the last month her health went way fast. Putting her to sleep was rough , it's been hard changing my daily tasks with her gone. I will get a project knife and get back into making vids here soon myself. Good to see ya back bud .

    You rate everything by "not bad" followed by "pretty good". So is it not bad or pretty good? Those two things have different meaning. Not bad is something that barely qualifies to be good. Pretty good is something that is genuinely good. This review is quite confusing.

    Ontario Knife Company, according to my information, does a lot of military and police contracts. Their biggest issue is that the quality control needs work. Fortunately they have a good warranty department. I have the Expensive, Ontario Kephart knife (Ontario Blackbird in S35VN). The initial Edge was serviceable but not that good. I spent a while re profiling the blade and polishing it. My only complaints with the Blackbird is that though it is serviceable it is not what I want in an ideal knife (Kydex sheathe, Thin behind the edge, and sabre grind).

    When I hear the expression "one size fits all", I know that the speaker is a moron. No clothes item is one size fits all. No knife is one size fits all. 1. the skill set is in the user, not the tool. 2. I am aware of the misconceptions. One of favorite movies as a kid was The Steel Helmet. It had a young soldier endlessly sharpening his military issue knife. After I became a knife dealer, I came to understand why issued military knives are not sharp. Hint, the application requires a rough sharpness, not a sushi knife sharpness. 3. I acquire a later Ontario version and modified the guard and the grind. Easy to do and you end up with a better "survival knife" for usage in the woods, not an airplane. 4. A person needs to be realistic. What are the chances that you are going to stranded in the woods, in a jungle, or in hand to hand combat? Are you really going to be away from civilization and have to carry a sharpening stone. If you know what you are doing sharpening on a concrete sidewalk or a stone, you have more knowledge than the youtube experts who insist that you carry a sharpening stone.

    Excellent presentation. Knife guy here. Prefer the modern version. Cut off the rubberized top and one can choke up on the knife very well. Sharpen the blade to YOUR degree of desired sharpless on an electric sharpener for a few minutes and you are good to go. If you want a jet pilot survival knife that is ready to go right out of the box, it is the Fallkniven f1. No concept of being a crew member's tool to cut out of WW2 crashed cargo planes.
